It comes down to trip length and how you pack. Ricardo medium check-in bags (typically 24″–25″) are ideal for 4–7 day trips and are easier to lift into overhead luggage carousels. Ricardo large check-in bags (typically 28″–30″) are built for 7+ day journeys or families sharing one bag. If you tend to overpack or travel with gear, go large. For families, we recommend a large check-in for maximum capacity. The Montecito 2.0 Hardside Large Check-In and Rodeo Drive 2.0 Hardside Large offer premium polycarbonate shells with a built-in TSA lock and durable spinner wheels. For eco-conscious families, the Avalon rPET Large Check-In is made from GRS-certified recycled materials and is exceptionally lightweight. Most Ricardo checked bags include a built-in TSA-recognized combination lock, letting you set your own 3-digit code. TSA agents can open and re-lock your bag during inspections without cutting it. Note that Oceano does not include a built-in TSA lock. Always check individual product pages to confirm before purchasing.
Both are 100% polycarbonate hardside bags, but they serve slightly different travelers. The Montecito 2.0 is our most feature-rich line — it includes a removable toiletry bag, organized interior pockets, and a refined silhouette. Cambria is a bolder, colorful hardside built with a scratch-resistant shell and a more streamlined interior, making it a great choice if you want standout style at a more accessible price point.
Most Ricardo checked bags feature an expansion zipper that adds approximately 2″ of extra packing depth — perfect for souvenir-heavy return trips. Keep in mind that expanding your bag increases its overall size, which may push it over airline weight limits if you're already packing near capacity. We recommend leaving a few pounds of buffer when you head out so you have room to expand on the way back.
