Travel Bags FAQ
Your Questions, Answered
The Bags collection brings together non-luggage travel bags from five Ricardo collections: Avalon rPET (backpack and weekender duffel), Malibu Bay 3.0 (convertible tech backpack, weekender duffel, and tote), Montecito 2.0 (rolling duffel), Rodeo Drive 2.0 (convertible tech backpack and weekender duffel), and Flight Essentials (boarding bags, backpack, layover tote, wheel-a-board, and small cooler).
Flight Essentials was designed in collaboration with aviation professionals and is trusted by over 220,000 crew members worldwide. Every bag in the line is constructed from 1680D ballistic nylon — the same material used in military-grade gear — with YKK® EYL zippers rated for thousands of open-and-close cycles. Dimensions are FAA-compliant, and the collection carries a 3-year commercial warranty to reflect the demands of daily professional use. While it was built for crew, it’s equally well-suited for frequent travelers who want serious durability.
Yes — the Avalon rPET collection is constructed from GRS-certified recycled polyester fabric made from post-consumer plastic bottles. The Avalon Drop-Bottom Weekender Duffel and Laptop Backpack both carry this certification. The rPET fabric delivers the same performance as virgin polyester while significantly reducing the environmental footprint of each bag. Learn more on our Sustainability page.
The Montecito 2.0 Softside Rolling Duffel (50L) is ideal as an oversized checked bag alternative, a gear hauler for sports or outdoor trips, or a companion to hardside luggage when you need extra flexible capacity. Its inline skate wheels and telescoping handle make it easy to roll through airports, and the softside construction means it can squeeze into tight overhead compartments or cargo holds where rigid bags can’t.
Both bags convert between backpack and shoulder bag carry, but they’re aimed at different travelers. The Malibu Bay 3.0 Convertible Tech Backpack (21.8L) is a lightweight everyday option with vibrant color options and a casual aesthetic. The Rodeo Drive 2.0 Convertible Fashion Tech Backpack (12.4L) is a compact, fashion-forward design with premium materials that pairs naturally with the Rodeo Drive luggage line — ideal for day trips, commuting, or as a personal item on flights.
Most Ricardo bags — including the Avalon, Malibu Bay 3.0, Montecito 2.0, and Rodeo Drive 2.0 styles — are covered by the same 10-year limited warranty that applies to Ricardo luggage. The Flight Essentials collection carries a separate 3-year commercial warranty, which reflects its professional-use design and the higher wear cycle expectations of aviation crew. Yes — at 23L, the Avalon Laptop Backpack fits under most airline seats as a personal item. Most U.S. airlines allow personal items up to approximately 18″ x 14″ x 8″, and the Avalon Backpack is designed to fit within those dimensions. That said, personal item policies vary by airline and even by aircraft type, so we recommend checking with your carrier before you fly. Use our Airline Carry-On Compliance Checker to look up size limits by carrier.
The Flight Essentials Small Cooler (10L) is designed for crew use and is not a TSA liquids bag. It’s an insulated soft cooler intended for meals, snacks, and beverages in the cabin or on layovers. If you’re packing liquids for a flight, they still need to comply with the standard TSA 3-1-1 rule — containers of 3.4 oz or less, in a single quart-sized clear zip-top bag, one bag per passenger.
